What Factors Affect US Server Latency?

Network latency is a common problem when we use the Internet. Especially for applications that require high-speed response, such as online games, video calls, video conferences, etc., network latency is a critical factor. For US servers, the factors affecting network latency mainly include the following aspects:

Physical distance:

When data is transmitted on the Internet, it needs to pass through multiple routers and transfer stations. The farther the distance between these devices, the longer the data transmission will take, which will lead to increased network delay. For example, if you access a server in Los Angeles from a computer in New York, the data travels across network links across the continent, so network latency may be higher.

Network congestion:

When the amount of data transmission on the Internet exceeds the capacity of the network link, network congestion will occur, resulting in slower data transmission speed and increased network delay. This usually occurs during network peak hours, such as day or night.

Network equipment performance:

The performance of network equipment is also one of the factors that affect network delay. For example, if the processing power of the server or router is low, or if there is a fault in the network equipment, it may cause an increase in network latency.

Network protocol:

Different network protocols have different data transmission speeds and efficiencies. Some protocols may require more packets to transmit the same amount of data, resulting in increased network latency. For example, the transmission speed of the TCP protocol is relatively slow, while the transmission speed of the UDP protocol is relatively fast.

To sum up, there are many factors affecting network delay. In order to obtain better network performance, we need to choose a server with better conditions such as closer distance, less network congestion, higher performance of network equipment, and faster network protocol.
