A switch is a network device that works at the data link layer to identify and filter packets and forward them to the correct port. Switches use MAC address tables to determine the destination of packets, which can reduce network congestion and improve network efficiency. Modern switches can support advanced features such as virtual LAN and quality service.

Routers are network devices that work at and above the network layer to determine the best path for packets based on IP addresses and other routing information and forward packets between different networks.

The main function of the router is to connect different networks and route data packets. It also provides network address translation to enable multiple devices to share a common IP address, as well as firewall and security features to control network traffic and protect network security.

In summary, the hub is a simple basic network device used for signal broadcasting at the physical layer, and all ports share bandwidth, which is prone to network congestion. The switch provides only packet forwarding, works at the data link layer, and can forward packets according to the MAC address, reduces the broadcast and improves the network efficiency.
